about

There Aint No Easy Way - I love Darrell Scott’s
songwriting, one of my faves.

Bourgeois Blues - Huddie Leadbetter (Leadbelly),
and his wife Martha went to Washington in 1937
to record for the Library of Congress. The racist
treatment that met them inspired this
discrimination protest song.

The Mountain - A moving song from the great
Steve Earle on the lives of coal miners.

Jesus On The Mainline - An old traditional gospel
song that I got from Ry Cooder. A chance to play
with harmonys.

Wing And A Prayer - A song from WW2 and the
precarious lifestyle of bomber crews.
Another song from Ry Cooder.

Over The Garden Wall - A lovely old-timey song
from The Carter Family going back to the 1920s.
I got this from The Foghorn String Band.

In The Pines - I’ve heard so many versions of
this Leadbelly song. I borrowed this one from
Andy Baylor.

Vigilante Man - I recently came across this
Woody Guthrie song that I had recorded in 2004
and forgotten about. It must have been waiting
for the right time to reveal itself.

Lonestar - Nora Jones recorded this song on her
first, sublime album. I always liked it.

In The Galley - I wrote this tune when I was
getting into playing mandolin about 30 yrs ago.
Time for it to see the light of day.

Man Of Constant Sorrow - First recorded by
Emry Arthur in 1928. Made famous in the movie
Oh Brother Where Art Thou. I got this version
from my friend Chris Aronsten.

Review..
North coast folk/blues wanderer Slim Pickens returns with a laconic set of covers (plus the one original, an instrumental) set in the folk vein, a set of songs most would recognise but done in Slim’s trademark ‘slow and steady’ way.

And this isn’t to diminish how these eleven tracks are presented – indeed, the downbeat fashion in which he and his vagabond crew of local musos interpret a lot of these timeless tunes only adds to their power, such is folk music – there’s no urgency in the delivery, it’s the lyrics that bring the strength, and to that end Pickens has chosen some good ones – Huddie Leadbetter’s ‘Bourgeois Blues’; the traditionals ‘Jesus On The mainline’ and ‘Man Of Constant Sorrow’ (done very differently from the movie version that most would know); Woody Guthrie’s ‘Vigilante Man’ and Darrell Scott’s ‘There Ain’t No Easy Way’.

The guitar-pickin’ original adds a solid little dose of instrumental prowess (courtesy of Slim himself) sans lyrics, while the likes of Guy Kachel (harmonica), Gleny Rae (fiddle) and Neil McCann (drums) flesh it out in a way that sees these tracks retain a slimness, while losing nothing in the way of quality. Nothing new here from Pickens, but a slew of solid songs redefined; almost a set of field recordings which is exactly how Slim does it, and how it should be.
